Message from the Chairman of the Board
It’s a presidential election year. Politicians, pundits and buzzwords abound. History is in the making, and change is not only inevitable, but it is the promise driving the campaigns. Here in the heart of the country, the pace may be a bit slower (though as a career woman with three young children, I might argue that assumption), but change is no less a factor in our lives and in the makeup of our community. In the past year, change has been swift and significant for Independence. We’ve experienced the forces of nature and the forces of economic pressures that have reshaped the landscape of our town, leaving gaps in our residential areas and our downtown. Likewise, we’ve experienced the upswing of change, with steady growth and more on the horizon for our largest manufacturer; business development on West Main; the continued efforts of a motivated and resourceful housing task force; and the rebirth of an enhanced Leadership Independence program designed to cultivate future leaders. Political rhetoric aside, the Chamber’s focus remains local and strong in Independence In 2008, we will continue to recover from our losses while we strive for economic growth. We will collaborate with other organizations, other communities, business leaders, legislators, city leadership and volunteers to establish effective strategies for housing development, tourism and business retention. We will seek out opportunities to showcase our community for what it is – an exceptional place to live, work and raise a family. Joanne Cox Mercy Health System of Kansas Chairman of the Board
