Independence
,

–Applications are now being accepted for period craftsmen to
exhibit their wares during the Sixth Annual Prairie Days Festival,
Saturday, June 11th at the Little House on the Prairie.
Festival organizers are especially interested in vendors to exhibit
crafts common in the 1860-1875 era when Laura Ingalls Wilder lived
in
Independence
. Booth spaces rent for $20.00 if you will be selling any of your
products. Entry blanks
are available at the Independence Chamber of Commerce or online at www.indkschamber.org.
Applications are due April 28, 2005.
The festival is
open to the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and admission is $2. In
addition to period craftsmen, many other activities are scheduled
for Prairie Days Festival, including a character contest, musical
entertainment, food vendors, fishing derby, wagon rides and antique
farm equipment.
The
Little House on the Prairie is home to a replica of a log cabin used
by the Ingalls family depicted in the novel “Little House on the
Prairie” by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The site also is home to a
one-room schoolhouse used in
Rutland
Township
, and the old Wayside Post Office also is located on the grounds of
the historic site.
The Charles Ingalls
family made
Rutland
Township
their home in 1869-71 before moving to
Wisconsin
and eventually to
Minnesota
. Laura Ingalls Wilder would use the
Kansas
prairie and her childhood experiences as the initial setting and
storyline of her many novels. Her stories later became a television
series.
The Independence
Chamber of Commerce, Convention and Visitors Bureau, The Little
House on the Prairie, and several
Independence
businesses are sponsoring the event. For more information on Prairie
Days Festival, call the Chamber of Commerce at (620) 331-1890, or
visit the Little House on the Prairie Website at www.littlehouseonetheprairie.com.
